We fished Thursday to Sunday this past week. Fishing has really picked up. Water temps reached 60 degrees in some places and that is where we found fish.
Thursday: Charlie from "The Manitowoc Minute" fished with us. We only had a few hours so we focused on action and managed to find a bunch of hungry northern in the warm back bays. Charlie had a comedy show in Wausau that we went to that evening. It was hilarious. If you haven't gone to one of his live shows please treat yourself. You will be glad you did! Friday and Saturday: I gear fished the same section of river focusing on the warmer water areas as the Smallies just were not active yet in their pre-spawn areas close to shore. We did manage to find a few though tight to structure. On a fun note, I wanted to try and see what my helmet GoPro Cam would capture on topwater action. I didn't expect to catch a fish I just wanted to see how it captured the "pop." To my surprise, I hooked a solid 18" in Smallie on my second cast and a few minutes later landed a 31" Muskie on topwater all on film! Needless to say, I will be fishing topwater the rest of the year! I normally would wait a few weeks but if the fish tell me they'll eat topwater than we will fish topwater.
I ended Sunday fishing with topwater flies. We found as many northern as a guy would want to catch with a few nice Smallmouth. Smallmouth were found off rocky points next cabbage weed growth.
A certain section on Wisconsin had flows that were just about where I want them but were still a bit high. Temps in the high 50's right now and getting warmer mean the fishing the next few weeks will be phenomenal. This is a great time of year to catch big fish. I will be up this Thursday night ready to fish Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Nothing beats topwater Smallmouth Action!
